Understanding First Fix Collated Nail Gun Nails
First fix collated nail gun nails are specially designed nails that are used in conjunction with a collated nail gun. These nails are typically used in the initial phase of construction or carpentry work and are commonly referred to as framing nails. They are ideal for tasks such as erecting timber frames, fixing joists, floorboards, and heavy-duty construction work.
The Basics of First Fix Collated Nails
First fix collated nail gun nails are typically longer and thicker than second fix nails, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications such as framing/studding. They are manufactured from high-grade steel and have a conical shape, allowing them to penetrate and hold materials securely. The collated nails come in various lengths, typically ranging from 50mm to 90mm, and diameters 2.8mm and 3.1mm, ensuring compatibility with different types of projects.
These nails are not only designed for strength and durability but also for ease of use. They are collated, meaning they are joined together in a strip or coil, making them quick and convenient to load into a nail gun. This eliminates the need to load individual nails, saving valuable time and effort on the job site.
Types of First Fix Collated Nails
There are various types of first fix collated nail gun nails available, each suited for different applications. Noteworthy options include smooth shank nails, ring shank nails, and twisted shank nails. Smooth shank nails are suitable for general construction purposes, while ring shank nails offer improved grip and are particularly useful in areas prone to high winds or vibrations such as roofing applications. Twisted shank nails provide exceptional holding power and are commonly used in load-bearing structural applications.
It’s important to choose the right type of nail for your specific project to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Factors to consider include the type of material being fastened, the anticipated load or stress on the joint, and the environmental conditions the nails will be exposed to.
Now that we’ve covered the basics of first fix collated nail gun nails, let’s move on to choosing the right nail gun for your project.
Paul says…
I usually get asked if alternative brands are as good as Paslode. We have been selling the Champion, Fischer and FirmaHold brands now for many years with very little issues. What sets the different brands apart is the quality of the fuel cells, but the fuel cells in alternative brands work fine in pretty much all applications. If your nail gun doesn’t require fuel cells, then there is practically no difference – although some people do have preference for certain brands in their nail guns. Using alternatives to the Paslode brand can save you a lot of money. All of the above brands of nails work pefectly well in the Paslode IM350 nail gun.
One thing to consider when buying a nail gun is: can I use all brands of nails and will it fire all sizes of nails?
The Paslode IM350 and Fischer FGW90F will fire all sizes from 50mm to 90mm ring shank nails consistently. The Paslode IM360i will fire Paslode nails only. This option can be very costly when compared to other brands.
Nail guns come with and without fuel cells. The fuel cells provide extra power when firing 90mm smooth and ring shank nails into to timber. Battery only nail guns tend to struggle with firing 90mm nails consistently, because of the lack of power.

Choosing the Right Nail Gun for Your Project
When it comes to selecting the right nail gun for your project, several factors should be considered. Whether you’re a professional carpenter or a DIY enthusiast, choosing the appropriate nail gun can make a significant difference in the efficiency and quality of your work.
Let’s dive deeper into the factors you should consider when choosing a nail gun:
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Nail Gun
- The type of project: Different nail guns are designed for specific applications, so it’s essential to choose one that aligns with your needs. Whether you’re working on framing, trim work, or upholstery, there’s a nail gun specifically tailored for the job.
- Power source: Nail guns can be powered by air compressors, gas cartridges, or batteries, so it’s crucial to consider portability and power availability. If you’re working in a location without access to electricity, a gas-powered or battery-powered nail gun might be the best choice.
- Nail size compatibility: Ensure that the nail gun you choose is compatible with the size of nails you intend to use. Different projects require different nail sizes, so it’s important to have a nail gun that can accommodate your specific needs.
- Ease of use: Ergonomics, weight, and features such as depth adjustment can significantly impact the ease of use and maneuverability of the nail gun. Look for a nail gun that feels comfortable in your hand and has features that make your work more efficient.
Pros and Cons of Different Nail Guns
Now that you have a better understanding of the factors to consider, let’s explore the pros and cons of different types of nail guns:
1. Pneumatic nail guns: These nail guns are powered by air compressors and are commonly used in professional settings due to their power and fast operation. They provide consistent driving force and are capable of handling heavy-duty projects. However, they require an air compressor, which adds to the overall cost, not easy to move around building sites and can be noisy.
2. Gas-powered nail guns: These nail guns rely on gas cartridges and are ideal for use in remote locations or where an air compressor is not available. They offer excellent portability and can handle a wide range of projects. However, they may require constant refilling of gas cartridges, which can be an additional expense.
3. Battery-powered nail guns: These nail guns offer cordless convenience and eliminate the need for an air compressor or gas cartridges. They are lightweight and easy to maneuver, making them ideal for smaller projects or working in tight spaces. However, they may have limited power compared to pneumatic or gas-powered nail guns and require regular battery charging.
Now that you’re familiar with nail gun selection, let’s move on to essential safety measures when using nail guns. Safety should always be a top priority to ensure a successful and injury-free project.
Safety Measures When Using Nail Guns
Working with nail guns requires careful attention to safety to prevent accidents and injuries.
Personal Protective Equipment for Nail Gun Use
Before using a nail gun, make sure to equip yourself with the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris, ear protection to reduce noise exposure, and gloves to provide grip and protect your hands from any potential mishaps.
Safe Handling and Operation of Nail Guns
Proper handling and operation of the nail gun are crucial to prevent accidents:
- Read and understand the manufacturer’s instructions before use.
- Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
- Keep the nail gun pointed away from yourself and others.
- Ensure the work area is clean and free from obstructions.
- Never carry a loaded nail gun by the trigger.
It is also essential to be mindful of the type of material you are working on when using a nail gun. Different materials may require specific nail types and firing pressures to ensure a secure and accurate fastening. Understanding the characteristics of the material will help you select the appropriate nails and settings for the task at hand.
Additionally, regular maintenance of your nail gun is key to its longevity and performance. This includes cleaning the tool after each use, checking for any signs of wear or damage, and lubricating moving parts as recommended by the manufacturer. Proper maintenance not only prolongs the life of the nail gun but also ensures safe and efficient operation.

Regular Maintenance for Nail Guns
To ensure optimal performance, follow these maintenance tips:
- Regularly clean the nail gun, removing any debris or jammed nails.
- Apply lubricating oil to the moving parts as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect the power source, whether it’s an air compressor, gas cartridge, or battery, and ensure it’s functioning correctly.
- Check the nails for damage or corrosion and replace as needed.
Common Nail Gun Problems and Solutions
Despite regular maintenance, nail guns may encounter common problems that can be resolved with some troubleshooting:
- Jammed nails: Clear any jammed nails by removing the magazine and carefully extracting the blockage.
- Weak or no firing: Check the power source and ensure it’s adequately charged or pressurized. Also, inspect for any obstructions in the firing mechanism.
- Inconsistent nail depth: Adjust the depth setting as needed, ensuring the nails penetrate the material correctly.
Lastly, let’s focus on maximizing the efficiency of your nail gun through helpful tips and advanced techniques.
